Santoku is a platform for mobile forensics, mobile malware analysis and mobile application security assessment. The free Santoku Community Edition is a collaborative project to provide a pre-configured Linux environment with utilities, drivers and guides for these areas.

 

“Andrew Hoog (@ahoog42) presented at Chicago’s THOTCON today on hacking mobile while hacking – hackey sack that is. The specific topic was “Mobile security, forensics & malware w/ Santoku.”

 

That presented a nice opportunity to announce the release of Santoku 0.4. Still an alpha but with a major improvement – the introduction of a custom repository to manage package updates. This means moving forward, once you set up Santoku 0.4, future updates will come via package updates (apt-get or your preferred package manager) instead of requiring a new .iso download and installation. So if you’ve nested a bit in your Santoku, you won’t have to redo all your configurations and decorations.

 

Santoku 0.4 continues to be based on Lubuntu and we’ve made some updates to the included tools based on community input. We have some work to do still to make it more user-friendly but the major plumbing upgrade needed to be done.”
